Aza watched from the front window of the farrier's shop as Ferjival almost plowed down a dozen or so pedestrians. He recovered just in time and was now prancing down the main street, nose in the air. But that didn't keep him from peering this way and that, looking for her, for her steed, for some clue of where she'd gotten to.

"Ye good there, girl?" Pats asked her, coming in from the back of the shop.

"I think so," she answered, not looking at him.

"Hiding from someone?"

"I am, in fact. The Puraples want to arrest me." She turned, taking a deep breath.

He chuckled, and then the noise fell off quickly. "You aren't joking."

She shook her head and looked back out the window. "Mam Sior's son Ferjival is out there. He was going the other direction until he spotted me and turned right around."

"But," Pats came over and peeked out the window, "whate’r for?"

"I used to—" No, she couldn't tell him she worked for them. Then, she would have to lie about what she did and anyway, it explained nothing. "I can't tell you right now. Please, be patient with me. It's vital, though, that you'll let me stay until he goes."

Pats held up his hands and bowed his head. "You are welcome here as long as you like. I assume Ginny's out back?"

She nodded.

"And if he dares set one foot in my establishment, I shall make certain that he's unable to set his despicable arse on that beautiful horse for the rest of the summer."

Aza beamed and turned back to the window.
